Reports of bad service can be aired and multiplied rapidly across social media; and it has the potential to ruin Australian businesses in a short space of time. 

Whether Australian consumers are justified in their complaint or not, the communication power they now hold in airing their opinions can be devastating. 

An American Express dining study found that on average, people are 50% more likely to complain to others, than complain directly to the dining establishment. The study highlighted the popularity of social media as an outlet to air grievances.

An American Express global customer service barometer survey also found that Australians voice their frustrations more often and to more people than most other countries surveyed. 

On average, a disgruntled Australian customer will tell an average of 23 people about bad service compared to an average of 10 they will tell about good service.

It is interesting to note that Australian consumers also tend to avoid direct confrontation with a provider of poor service, but they are not slow in telling everyone else.

This business management tip should spell a warning to business to take good care of their customers.  The responsibility for customer care applies across the entire business, not just to front line sales people.  It also implemented through relationship management, service standards, terms of trade, returns policies and warranty policies.

Before the iPhone´s launch, browsing the Internet from a mobile phone was more of a chore than a convenience.  That is not the case any longer.  The iPhone has changed the way mobile phones are being used to access the Internet.

With the iPhone’s large, multi-touch screen, mobile internet browsing is rapidly becoming a viable alternative to computer monitor-based browsing.

In addition to a website that displays optimally on large LCD monitors, the internet component of your business will now require and a different website that displays optimally on a mobile phone screen.  The idea is to design each to suit the medium on which it is being viewed.

Although each website design will need a different approach, the goal is still the same – to drive visitor action, whether that is to make a phone call, submit a form, or buy a product.

Consumers are changing the way they make purchasing decisions.  They are already using geo-location facilities to find their nearest shop and using apps to compare prices, find local discounts and check inventories.  It is often faster to scan a barcode or check a mobile website for product information than to ask a store assistant.

This rapid change in consumer buying behaviour means huge opportunities for tech savvy retailers and internet marketers.

Diversify and lower your risk

At our Australian business consultancy, there is no need to take enormous risk to get a good consistent return on your investment.  There are many options.  Investing your time and money into your own business which produces a profit is one way to earn a return on your investment. 

Another option is to head for a more passive investment where you are not so ‘hands-on’ involved.  For example you can invest in shares and earn a dividend.  The regular dividends would be the return on your investment. 

It all depends on how you perceive risk!  If the share market is too volatile for you, putting your money into term deposit (for example) is another more conservative way to earn a return on your investment.

So which way should you go?  This all depends on you.  Spreading your risk by not having all your eggs in one basket is a smart thing to do.  However, you should be careful not to spread yourself too far.  You should also stick with what you know or, if you don’t know …. Start learning!

You should seek professional guidance.  There is no substitute for knowledge and understanding.

It is crucial in managing start up business that once you have established your independent source of business income, you don’t take it for granted.  It needs constant care and attention to maintain and grow it.

Regular income is the foundation of family wealth building.  That is why positive cash flow is critically important.  Negative cash flow means negative wealth because you have to dip into your saving or credit card to make ends meet.

So don’t stop at one!  It helps to have more than one source of income.  It also helps a lot to have at least one source of income that doesn’t rely totally on your personal exertion to earn. 

In other words, strive towards establishing a source of “money while you sleep”.  That way, you can take a holiday or afford time out of your business if you are sick or have an accident.

Managing start up business – an independent source of income

Focus on customers!

The focus of managing start up business should be to develop an independent source of income.  By doing so, it means that you have, or are in the process of removing yourself from the realm of ‘employee dependence’. 

Instead of depending on one source of income in the form of your employer, you are diversifying your income earning opportunities across a growing customer base.  The idea is that no one customer should be totally responsible for your income.

It is dangerous to put all your eggs into one basket.  Being an employee, there is no such thing as job security.   Although it may not appear to be so at first, there is much more job security by being a business owner and being in control of who contributes to your income.

If an employer withdraws his or her income you are basically out of a job.  However, if a customer withdraws income in the form of choosing to shop elsewhere, you should still have plenty more customers left to contribute to your income.  You can also add more at any time.

Life is much more than money but when living in such a structured society, money matters a lot.  Without it, participation in our society is challenging.

Achieving financial independence does not mean being among the richest 100 people in Australia.  It simply means being able to pay your bills and buying the things you need without being dependent on someone else for money.

You are not financially independent if you have to rely on your partner for money.  You are not financially independent if you have to rely on a job.  Why?  Because both can disappear or conditions can change overnight!

Financial independence is the ability for you personally to maintain income even if your relationship status changes or your job status changes.   Financial independence means maintaining adequate income even though you can’t work (e.g. become ill or have an accident) or choose not to work (e.g. to take a holiday or have a family).

Your capacity to physically go to work and your capacity to earn money are two different things.  You know you are financially independent when you are not relying on someone else to pay you for your 8 hours work each day and when you have broken the nexus between earning money and selling your time.

Financial independence is not a hard to achieve.  However, it does require a different way of thinking, and it does require that you break the bad habit of reliance on others.   Once achieved however, it represents peace of mind!

First rule of planning

The only plan you have is the one you create yourself.

If you don’t have a plan then you will fly by the seat of your pants.  Most people don’t work to a business plan and end up working long hours to make a mediochre living.

If you don’t have a written down plan then you don’t really have a plan.  All you have is good intention to back up your ideas.

Putting your plan into writing demonstrates:

  • Your commitment
  • That you have firm goals
  • That you have done research and gained knowledge
  • You see the problems as well as the opportunities
  • You know your limits and the resources you need

Creating a business plan or financial plan is the first step in creating positive change.  At first, it might be no more than a written reflection of your aspiration and imagination, but subsequent research will reveal the obstacles and opportunities and make the probable possible.  Your action will then make the possible real.

Female entrepreneurs rule!

Here’s to female entrepreneurs!

Entrepreneurs are starters and builders of business who are good at enlisting others in their cause.  Traditionally the majority of entrepreneurs have been male but more and more females are taking on new business startups and succeeding.

In my experience, female entrepreneurs are not better or worse than males.  They are different.  It is the biological and neurological differences between males and females that translate into different approaches to business startup and growth.

For example, walk into a female’s office and the décor is a little softer and a little more welcoming.  The space is a more organised and there is often evidence of a balanced life outside work.

In my experience, females are good listeners – the best listeners.  They tend to listen first and talk later, after they understand the need or issue.

Women can be very shy but once engaged in a conversation, they are much more social, and network really well, particularly with other women.  It seems to make no difference whether it is play group or a business breakfast women are capable of networking with each other many times faster than males.

In general I have always found a higher level of empathy among females.  It seems to go hand in hand with their willingness to engage and listen.  For mine, they are much better at putting themselves in another’s shoes, taking a genuine interest and taking the time to understand.

Women really get it!  They know it’s about socializing.  They know it’s about listening, really listening; starting conversations, interacting, bringing people together and collaborating with each other.

Moving away from the socialisation aspects, one of the biggest differences I have noticed is that females ask for advice and heed good advice much better than males.

They realise that they need help in certain areas and not afraid to ask.  They are very diligent with planning as well.  It is part of the need to be organised and knowing what is happening day to day.

Timing is everything

Timing is everything

There is an important ingredient often missing from the business starter’s skill set.  That is a sense of business timing.

When considering starting a business, there is a time to start and a time to exit; a time to buy and a time to sell; a time to move and a time to wait; a time to show strength and a time to go with the flow.  In this sense, timing means that there are some moments in time that are better than others to act or to cease to act.

However, there are no firm rules.  It is a matter of experience and practiced judgment.  So it is not surprising that the nuances of timing are lost to inexperienced business starters.

Poor timing is due in part to a lack of time in the driver’s seat.  It is due in part to poor awareness and observation skills and to a lack of knowledge and also to a failure to keep knowledge up to date.

A good example of poor judgment in relation to timing can be best described by the Australian adage of ‘flogging a dead horse’ (staying too long on a bad idea).  It is often said, that one of the defining attributes of a successful entrepreneur is persistence.  However, sheer persistence will win the day only on the condition that the underlying idea or concept is sound.

Inexperience tends to discount persistence as a major contributing factor in success.  The truth is that success is rarely an overnight event.  It just appears that way because it has become visible to a large proportion of the population.  It is true that persistence plays a big part, but timing is crucial as well.

No matter how persistent you are about breaking through and succeeding, there is still a ‘preferred time’ to introduce a new idea (time-in) and there is only a finite amount of time that it can be financially supported, before a decision is made to cease (time-out).  The time-in, the period of time and the time-out depend on individual circumstances and available resources.
