Hey, I'm Gary

I started our firm in 1998.  Although I’m the owner and good at what I do, I prefer to call Gary Weigh & Associates ‘our firm’ because I have connected with some incredibly smart and extremely nice people.  It is a strategy I would encourage every business owner to consider.

Why do I do it? I love helping people.  I express that through business coachingblogging and teaching Aikido.   I write all of the business content on this site for you because I want it to be learning resource.  I believe that education is a large part of business coaching.   The more you know, the more you can do and the more successful you will be.   So I am more than happy to share my knowledge and experience.

My business coaching bridges the gap between your raw enthusiasm and determination and creating a successful business.   Coaching is not necessarily a permanent need.  It is needed when starting up and launching into unknown territory and when rejuvenating an existing businesses.   It is also needed at times of difficulty and to overcome inertia.   For me coaching is a pleasure.  For you it is personal development in the business arena.

And then there is my second love - Aikido. I love practising the art and I give my time to teaching at Griffith Aikido in Brisbane because I have seen how Aikido changes people.  It is the catalyst which allows the true self and all of its wonderful potential to shine on through.

It builds confidence & determination.  It increases self esteem and reduces fear & self doubt.  (Just great for business building).  Over time, there is a tendency to develop a humility and a sense of peace and calm; of being comfortable inside your own skin.  All of that … and it is still a good night out on the mat!

The art of Aikido has had a profound effect on me and my business.  When I stopped being competitive and I stopped focusing on money and other short term goals, the world of possibilities simply opened up like a gigantic sunflower.  When I started focusing on other people and taking a real interest in their welfare, everything changed.  I feel back in love with my business again because I realised why I was doing it.  My business grew and grew.  Why?  because it isn’t about me!

The beautiful thing about Aikido is that it is not an aggressive art.  It is purely defensive.  It is the thinking person’s martial art.  The development of the non-fighting mind is the best gift that the founder of Aikido, Master Morihei Ueshiba, could have ever given the world.

Developing a non-fighting mind really means conquering the self.  How that’s done? …. Well you just have to experience it to understand it.  The result is an amazingly calm positive mind with a huge helping of self control and self belief.   Calmness and clarity of thought under pressure makes for some really good decision making and problem solving skills, both in life and in business.

All of the benefits come with regular and repetitious practice and it is a self development program of the highest order.  I have seen how the practice of Aikido makes significant ‘quality of life’ improvements in autistic children, severe epilepsy suffers and cerebral palsy sufferers.

One of our most dedicated female members (at Griffith Aikido) started learning Aikido about 3 months after finishing radiation and chemo therapy following breast cancer surgery at age 29.  When she started she could barely lift herself off the mat.  Two years later she wears a brown belt and has the energy levels of a healthy teenager.  I love that … that’s why I’m there!

My social goal is a shared one and is to help Griffith Aikido to build a 7-day Aikido Centre in Brisbane for the benefit of both able bodied and disabled people; male and female alike, young and old alike, from all backgrounds, cultures and beliefs.  Our mission is “Aikido for Everyone!”

Now you can understand my passionate belief in the relevance and application of the principles of Aikido to the conduct and ethics of business.  More than anything, I believe in the incredible power of the mind.  It is the source of all healing, achievement and success.

Aikido may look like the graceful flow of physical technique in its outward expression, but it is the internal art that is important.

In the words of Master Koretoshi Maruyama, the founder of our Yuishinkai style of Aikido, “I am mind itself!”

I express my love of Aikido on my personal blog at Aikido Secrets.

Thanks for reading!

Gary
